Jay-z has decided to step down as Def Jam President after his 3 year stay to pursue different ventures. Def Jam and Jay-z were in heated discussion over a renewal for his contract that expires at the end of 2007 for the last month. For whatever reason they decided to part ways but Jay-z will still be a recording artist for Def Jam/Roc-a-fella records.

Jay-z is heavily criticized for what he doesn't do at Def Jam. Artists such as LL Cool J have blamed him for not doing enough for their projects but selectively ignored the fact he signed Ne-Yo, Rihanna, and Young Jeezy...three of the most successful acts out of the last 3-4 years in all of music.
It's bad for Def Jam IMO because no one is going to be able to fill his shoes.
